There's an old adage that likens having money to spend with a burning hole in ones pocket. Well, the thing that burns a hole in my pocket faster than anything is a Border's 20% off coupon. I get my hands on one of those suckers, usually from the e-mail mailing list, and I feel compelled to go out and save money - twenty-percent to be exact. The question is, just exactly how much iwill that be?
Oh, I know that the amount of savings is determined by the price on the book,CD or DVD, the problem is, which one do I buy?
With CD's and DVDs, the price is pretty much in the same ballpark no matter what you choose, the exception being new releases and multi-disc sets. The only decision there is which artist do I want to bring home with me. I usually know the answer to that before I walk into the store.
But with books it's different. There are so many variables to consider. Do I want hardcover? New release? The Everyman's edition of the classic that I love? Do I really need another cookbook? Should I concentrate on trade paperbacks? Is the savings worth it? Do I really want it? Is the "buy two get one free" offer a better deal? Could I get both? Should I? Do I really need the latest installment of the Sci Fi fantasy series that I love, or should I wait a year for the paperback to come out? Do I want a light, entertaining fluff piece? Something that will make me think? Political work? Satire? History? Biography? Is this the time to get that instructional book on language, knitting, exercise? Shoud I trust the opinion of the reviewer in The New York Times? Kirkus Reviews? People Magazine? Do I really want that book? Need that book? Want that book? Need that book? After I get it home, will I like the book, or will all my efforts to choose have been in vain?
Oh, the pressure to decide, nay,to make the RIGHT decision - after all, a savings of twenty percent is at stake.
I can't take it anymore. it's just too much to think about right now. Besides, I still have two whole days before the coupon expires...
